Aquamarine

People love the sky ocean blue color of aquamarine. They range in color from light sky blue to the colors of the deep blue ocean in Caribbean sunshine. As far as gemstones go, they are nearly as popular as rubies, sapphires and emeralds. And like emerald, aquamarines are made of baryl, though they are much more crystalline and have fewer inclusions as a rule.

Traditionally, aquamarines has been associated with a joyous marriage and prosperity. Sailors carried it for good luck. Iron gives the stone its color, which is relatively hard, ranging 7 to 8 on the Mohs scale. The deeper the color, the more valuable the stone. Aquamarine is often chosen at the birthstone for March and some of the best rough material comes from Brazil.
