Here's our Messina Round Belt Buckle with Stone featuring a swirling gold motif found in central Europe 2300 years ago. The layered circular design has decorative accents, and is highlighted by garnets set in 14k gold, although other gems are available –. It is entirely hand fabricated by our lead designer and co-founder of the company, Helen Chantler. She designed this buckle in January, 2006. Meaning of Knot

  Swirl:

This motif originated in what is now Italy, Hungary and Germany 2300 years ago, yet the design is strikingly contemporary. It shows the spiral, which has always symbolized growth, gathering into a circle. To use, it suggests the curl of a plant's stem or root, or the path of a river. No one can be certain as to what it means, but to us, it seems to symbolize the fertility and fecundity. The wave-like pattern, with its ease and curl, also represents a power that is unstoppable and relentless.

Remembering the ancient Celtic stories and legends I grew up with in the UK brought me back to my tribal ancestry. Celtic design comes out of reverence for the earth and generations of tribal tradition. From this place, I have tried to bring contemporary style to motifs that are ancient and meaningful. I view my business as a community that must benefit human communities without harming ecosystems which is why I am pleased we work with 100% recycled metals and, when ever possible, ethically sourced gemstones.
