Black Spinel

black spinel

Spinel is a naturally occurring crystalline gemstone that comes in a variety of colors. It is magnesium based and forms in metamorphic and plutonic rock formations. The highest quality specimens come from Sri Lanka and Burma. We use the faceted black variety in some of our pieces, though spinels of other colors have been popular as well. Red spinel, for example, have been used for adornment for many centuries, substituted for ruby in crowns of England and Russian kings. The name, “spinel” is probably from the Latin term, spina, which means thorn because the uncut crystals can be sharp.
